We sat down with one of our amazing board members, Wendy Jameson, to learn more about her experience at CSS. Below is an excerpt of that interview.
Can you share a personal story or experience that makes our mission meaningful to you?
Like so many of us, I have lost family members and friends to suicide. I have seen how much one person’s suicide can negatively affect loved ones over generations. I am proud to be involved with CSS because this organization provides exactly the kind of services that can interrupt that cycle and give survivors of suicide loss the best chance for a long and healthy life.
In your time with us, what impact or success story stands out to you as a great example of our mission in action?
I provided crisis counseling on the CSS Crisis Line for 3 1/2 years. One of my first callers was a very distraught young mother who started the call saying, “I just can’t do this anymore.“ She went on to share, “I love my children but right now I don’t have anything left to give them. They’d be better off without me.” I was able to make a connection with the caller, collaborate with her and her husband on a safety plan, and provide resources for further support. I felt emotional afterwards because, as a mother myself, I could identify with how much pain she must be in if she believes she is not able to be a good parent. Now, hundreds of calls later, I can personally vouch for the high quality services provided by Crisis Support Services of Alameda County (CSS) as counselors assess suicide risk, help callers through the immediate crisis, actively listen and empathize, assist the caller to draw on their strengths and support network, and connect them to vital resources.
How do you see donations making a real difference in the lives of those we serve?
Having served on CSS’ board for several years I know that CSS operates on a very thin margin — it is a lean organization that uses its limited resources efficiently and effectively. I also know that government funding for suicide prevention and crisis support is shrinking, making private donations more critical than ever. I know that, when I donate to CSS, my dollar counts and it goes a long way to helping the people in our communities in need.
