Zero Suicide is a priority of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and is based on the foundational belief that suicide is preventable in health care and behavioral health care settings. It’s approach is a seven-step, systems wide approach that is “based on the realization that suicidal individuals often fall through the cracks of the health care system.”

As part of this approach, ensuring a competent staff through suicide prevention training is a key component that Crisis Support Services of Alameda County supports.
Suicide Prevention & the Role of Primary Care Providers
It is estimated that 45% of individuals who died by suicide saw their primary care provider in the month prior to their death, but will often not disclose these thoughts. This highlights the importance of primary care settings in suicide prevention. Through the Zero Suicide grant, Crisis Support Services is excited to offer free trainings to primary care providers and their staff in an effort to reach the goal of zero suicide deaths in health care settings. Considering that most patients are likely to only seek help from a primary care provider for mental health challenges, our training aims to equip all members of the healthcare staff with the tools to identify and help these individuals.
