OAKLAND, CALIF., MAY 4, 2024 – Crisis Support Services of Alameda County (CSS) is excited to announce the 14th Annual Healing Hearts Walk/Run/MOVE! for Suicide Prevention.
The family-friendly event will be held Saturday, May 4 at the Edoff Memorial Bandstand at Lake Merritt in Oakland where the event had been held prior to 2020. Also, new this year, the event will provide more opportunities for participation with other kinds of movement activities in addition to the 5K (3.1 miles) route around the lake. Think yoga, Tai Chi, dance, and movement! Once again, we will also be hosting the Health and Wellness Fair where up to 20 mental and physical health agencies will present information about the important work they do.
CSS Executive Director, Narges Dillon, said “The hope is to create a sense of ‘you are not alone’ for others in our community who have lost loved ones to suicide or have struggled themselves. There is tremendous stigma-reducing power to public events.”
This fundraising event helps support our 24-hour crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline and other critical mental health services through-out the county.
In order to encourage our community to connect and support each other, we are using a “pay what you can” model with a suggested donation of $35 — but we welcome any amount of support from participants.
Why is this important? Given this unprecedented time, when more people are feeling isolated, it’s important that we find ways to connect to and support each other and stay active. Hosting the 2024 Healing Hearts Walk/Run/Move for Suicide Prevention is aligned with the suicide prevention mission of CSS. This event gives visibility to a topic that has for too long been in the shadows, creates an opportunity for connection, and makes room for grief and loss that many may hold.
